Cigarette craving: how to prepare in 90 seconds
A craving for a cigarette or a vape usually passes within a few minutes. Getting through those minutes is the hard part when you want to stop smoking. A short breathing routine gives you something to do instead.
What happens in your body and mind
Cravings are often triggered by habits and stress. Slow, deep breathing replaces the breathing pattern of smoking and calms the body while the craving fades.
Your 90-second routine with Helena
1. Arrive, 30 seconds. Breathe with Helena: Inhale 4s · hold 2s · exhale 7s · hold 1s. The first half of the video plays while you breathe in, the second half while you breathe out. The FLOW line shows you when to breathe, and the music follows your breath.
2. Visualize, 45 seconds. Five short scenes walk you through the cigarette craving:
- Picture the moment the cigarette craving usually shows up. The place, the time, the trigger.
- Feel the urge rise like a wave. Watch it — you do not have to obey it.
- Breathe out slowly. See the wave peak… and begin to fall.
- See yourself doing your replacement: water, a short walk, a message to a friend.
- See yourself ten minutes later, glad you let the wave pass.
3. Anchor, 15 seconds. Take one slow sip of water. Say quietly: “Pass.” Use the same gesture later, in the real moment, with one long exhale.
When to use it
- When the craving hits.
- In situations where you used to smoke.
- After meals or with coffee.

Why it works
Mental rehearsal, picturing a situation step by step before it happens, uses many of the same brain networks as the real action. Athletes, musicians and surgeons use it to prepare. Slow breathing with a longer exhale shifts the body towards its calming, parasympathetic side. AHΞHA puts both into one short routine you can repeat whenever you need it. Read the research.
