A phone call you dread: how to prepare in 90 seconds

Many people dread phone calls: calling the doctor, the landlord, an office or a customer. Phone anxiety is common and often leads to putting calls off for days. A short routine makes it easier to just dial.

What happens in your body and mind

On the phone we cannot see the other person's face, so the brain fills the gap with worst cases. Slow breathing calms this, and picturing the call step by step makes it predictable.

Your 90-second routine with Steve

1. Arrive, 30 seconds. Breathe with Steve: Inhale 4s · hold 1s · exhale 6s. The first half of the video plays while you breathe in, the second half while you breathe out. The FLOW line shows you when to breathe, and the music follows your breath.

2. Visualize, 45 seconds. Five short scenes walk you through the phone call:

  1. Picture where the phone call will happen, and the person in front of you.
  2. Hear your opening sentence — simple, kind and clear.
  3. They react strongly. You feel it, exhale, and stay with what matters.
  4. You listen fully before you answer. Your voice stays low and steady.
  5. See the end: whatever the outcome, you were honest and respectful.

3. Anchor, 15 seconds. Place one hand on your chest. Say quietly: “Steady.” Use the same gesture later, in the real moment, with one long exhale.

Why it works

Mental rehearsal, picturing a situation step by step before it happens, uses many of the same brain networks as the real action. Athletes, musicians and surgeons use it to prepare. Slow breathing with a longer exhale shifts the body towards its calming, parasympathetic side. AHΞHA puts both into one short routine you can repeat whenever you need it. Read the research.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get over phone anxiety?

Make calls small and routine: prepare one sentence, breathe for 90 seconds and dial. Each call that goes fine makes the next one easier.

What if the call goes badly?

Then you breathe out and let it go. One bad call does not say anything about you.

Is the routine free?

Yes. This routine is free and works in your browser, without an account. With a free account you can choose any coach, situation and music, and share sessions with friends.

Can I get a reminder before the phone call?

Yes. Install AHΞHA on your phone and set your own reminder times. A push message starts the routine with one tap.
